Retail Cages we have found that work well

We do not promote or recommend and specific cages or brands, these are simply the ones we found that work well.

You can find many good quality cages at many local pet stores and online. The first and most important thing to look for in a cage is will it be big enough for my rats to sleep, eat, play and have fun in. You do not want to get them too small of a cage where they are not able to exercise enough, but you also do not want to get a huge cage for 2 little babies where it will be overwhelming. Below we have made some suggestions for cages than most people can find with ease. 3/8” or 1/2” bar spacing is best for all rats.

Petco Cages-

Midwest Critter Nation- Single, Double (pictured) and Triple levels

This is a very highly recommended cage. We have multiple of these in our rattery. They are very sturdy, large and easy to clean. You can have 1-3 sections of caging depending on your needs, and you can always increase or decrease. This cage is large enough for multiple hammocks, hides, and toys. One downside is the shallow bottom pans. For coverings you will either need to use fleece with the shallow pans, normally used with litter boxes. Or you can invest in custom BASS pans (which we have at our rattery, with these pans you can use regular litter in the bottom. (Availability- Multiple locations)

Super Pet Habitat Defined Home for Rats

This cage is nice for a small handful of rats. The open area space is enough to hang hammocks and other toys in. The levels are solid and plastic so make sure to keep them clean.

Living World Ferret Habitat

This is a decent cage for 2 rats. The bar space is fairly small so it would would work for babies and adults. The downside is the plastic tray. This will need to be wiped down regularly. Also it has the risk of being chewed.

Prevue Dusted Rose Rat and Chinchilla Cage

This is a nice cage. Very similar to the Critter nation just a bit smaller and cheaper. Due to the set up of this cage there is a lot of room for a wheel, hammocks, toys and other hanging items.  The large door is good for getting items in and out. The pull out tray can make for easy cleaning. The downside of this cage is when the cage needs to get thoroughly cleaned, it will probably be easiest to just take outside and hose down.

Petsmart Cages-

Prevue Wrought Iron Small Animal Cage

This is a great cage for 2 rats to about 5-6 depending on their size.  A big plus for this cage is the 3/8” bar spacing which allows even babies to be housed in this cage, right through adulthood.  This cage gives plenty of room to play and add toys and hammocks.  This cage has wheels which makes it easy to move from place to place and a large door to be able to get the ratties in and out of easily.  With this cage please use fleece or a bed on the bottom as too much wire on their feet can hurt them.

All Living Things Luxury Rat Pet Home

With ½” bars, this cage is great for babies all the way to adults. Another plus is that this cage is collapsible, and easily stored. This cage comes with many accessories that ratties need and love, wheel, hammock, water bottle)

Martins Cages-

The Rat High-rise (H-600HR)

This is a good cage for 2-3 rats. You would not want many more in here as there are a lot of levels and not as much play room. There is space for 1 decent size hammock. 2 doors allow for easy access to both main levels of the cage

The Rat Cabin (R-670)

This is another good cage for 2-3 rats. This cage provides more space for hammocks and toys to be hung as well as hides. 1 large access door is enough for the whole cage.

 The Rat Tower (R-690)

This is the second largest cage Martins makes specifically for rats. If you plan on having 3+ rats or if you would just like to give your guys more space, this cage is ideal. There is ample air space along with plenty of floor space to play on. 2 large access doors allow easy access to both main levels of the cage.

Tanks and Tank Toppers-

Tanks can be used if wire cages are not available. Tanks need to be cleaned more often than wire cages as the ammonia level can build since there is no air flow. A 15gal tank is the minimum that should be used for 2 rats, the bigger the better. Tank toppers can also be used to add extra space and an area that the rats can get away from the bedding when they want fresh air. The toppers also allow for hammocks and other hides to be used. Tank toppers can be found in a variety of sizes online. If you are looking for a custom size topper, please contact Ember of Passion Rattery and we will make one to fit perfectly on whatever size tank you are using!
